The Blue Ridge Mountains - Deep in the Heart of Horse Country
The range links two national parks: Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains. In many places along the parkway, there are metamorphic rocks (gneiss) with folded bands of light-and dark-colored minerals, which sometimes look like the folds and swirls in a marble cake. Although the term "Blue Ridge" is sometimes applied exclusively to the eastern edge or front range of the Appalachian Mountains, the geological definition of the Blue Ridge province extends westward to the Ridge and Valley area, encompassing the Great Smoky Mountains, the Great Balsams, the Roans, the Brushy Mountains (a "spur" of the Blue Ridge) and other mountain ranges.
The Blue Ridge Parkway, running 469 miles (750 km) along the crests of the Southern Appalachians, is history waiting to be discovered. Although the road is often seen primarily as a scenic byway with plenty of natural attractions, it is also a cross-section of Appalachian mountain history. Stretching almost 500 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge mountains through North Carolina and Virginia, it encompasses some of the oldest settlements of both pre-historic and early European settlement. Local residents and other visitors can trace much of the history of Appalachian culture by observing overlook signs, visitor center exhibits, restored historic structures, and developed areas, all of which reveal points of particular interest.
The Cherokee Indians of North Carolina, and the Monacan, Saponi, and Tutelo Indians of western Virginia, were among the earliest inhabitants of the Blue Ridge, leaving artifacts and changes in the landscape as evidence of their existence. Many of the fields still visible at the base of the mountains date back centuries to ancient American Indian agricultural methods of burning and deadening the trees and underbrush to provide needed grazing and crop land.
A drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway is meant to be slow-paced and relaxing. Winter seems to clear up the atmosphere, offering spectacular vistas. The Parkway meanders 469 miles between Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains National Parks. The Blue Ridge Parkway travels through twenty nine counties and accounts for two billion dollars each year in revenue to North Carolina and Virginia. At the time of its construction, the Blue Ridge Parkway was the longest road ever planned as a single unit in America.
Developed areas at regular intervals along the Parkway each carry a distinct personality, highlighting the natural or cultural history of the region. Although short walks or stops at these various locations will give visitors an up-close view, springtime blooms or magnificent vistas can be enjoyed from behind the wheel of your vehicle. Enjoy the view, but remember to watch the road! For more information on activities in and around Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, visit:

For many decades, local natives have taken enormous pride in the majesty of their horses, set against the brilliant greens, blues and colorful foliage of the Blue Ridge topography. Mighty warriors when required to defend their families, homes and culture, these early residents were also adept and adaptable agrarians. They knew and cherished their land and capably used it to breed and prepare their steeds for both peace and war. When European settlers moved into these lands they, too, found them perfect for producing champions of all breeds, capable of handling the most challenging military, exploratory, domestic and labor-intensive tasks of their times. As a result, the equestrian industry grew and flourished throughout the region.
That’s why today’s residents of these Blue Ridge Mountain communities – perhaps your future neighbors and friends - see equestrian activities and livelihoods as an essential and central part of their quality of life. Most folks around here, whether in cities or rural areas, are as comfortable in a saddle as they are in an office chair or couch – and, chances are, most of them would rather be in that saddle right now!
