Columbus, North Carolina - Deep in the Heart of Horse Country Dr. Columbus Mills, for whom the town was named, has been called the "Father of Polk County." One of his ancestors, Colonel Ambrose Mills, was a Loyalist who was hanged by Patriots after his capture at the Battle of Kings Mountain. It was largely through Mills' efforts as a state senator that Polk County was established, by sectioning off parts of Rutherford and Henderson Counties. In his honor, Columbus was officially designated as county seat of Polk County in 1855.
Those early leaders of the Town of Columbus owned large plantations that were
located just outside of the town limits. These were the days of the hoop skirt
and "Gone With the Wind," days of gallant southern gentlemen and the heyday of the South when "cotton was king." Many of these people were the direct descendants of the earliest setters who had located at the base of the White Oak Mountain range and who had fought in the Revolutionary War. During this same period, North Carolina was the nation's leading producer of gold (until the'49 California Gold Rush). In Columbus, gold was mined along Horse Creek and White Oak Creek.
Columbus was originally laid out with a church at each corner of the main streets. Two of these are in their original location today. The first structure - Columbus Baptist Church, established in 1857, is still in use, although it has been added to over the years. Columbus Presbyterian Church, established in 1895, is also in the original location but due to a fire the original building has been replaced. The Town of Columbus is distinguished by an imposing courthouse, built of handmade brick in 1855. The ancient slave block still remains on the courthouse lawn as a daily reminder of those troubled times.
Since before the turn of the century, people have been drawn to this beautiful "Gateway to the Mountains" with its temperate climate and its recreational, cultural, and equestrian traditions. There is something here for everyone of all ages and interests. For more information on activities in and around Columbus, North Carolina, visit:

For many decades, local natives have taken enormous pride in the majesty of their horses, set against the brilliant greens, blues and colorful foliage of the Blue Ridge topography. Mighty warriors when required to defend their families, homes and culture, these early residents were also adept and adaptable agrarians. They knew and cherished their land and capably used it to breed and prepare their steeds for both peace and war. When European settlers moved into these lands they, too, found them perfect for producing champions of all breeds, capable of handling the most challenging military, exploratory, domestic and labor-intensive tasks of their times. As a result, the equestrian industry grew and flourished throughout the region.
That’s why today’s residents of these Blue Ridge Mountain communities – perhaps your future neighbors and friends - see equestrian activities and livelihoods as an essential and central part of their quality of life. Most folks around here, whether in cities or rural areas, are as comfortable in a saddle as they are in an office chair or couch – and, chances are, most of them would rather be in that saddle right now!
