Part of the Spartanburg metro area, Landrum has managed to merge the cosmopolitan hustle-and-bustle of the modern urban setting with the relaxed luxury of suburban and semi-rural living.

Like most of the eastern seaboard, Landrum is rich in history. The first homesteaders began settling the Landrum area around 1760. They came from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia seeking the fertile and free land. These were hardy settlers that had to fight not only the elements of an isolated land but the natives, as well. To defend themselves, the settlers built a series of forts located at critical points. One, Earl’s Fort, was located approximately 2 miles east of the current City of Landrum.

The City is named after Rev. John Landrum who gave the railroad land in 1877 for the construction of a station. The first name for the town was Landrum’s Station, but was shortened to Landrum around 1900. As the railroad pushed further north into North Carolina, Landrum continued to grow and expand. In 1912, Landrum was incorporated as a Town and in 1973 it was made a City.

Today, horse farms, orchards, equestrian centers, and golf courses surround the area. This is a town of artists, musicians, retirees, shopkeepers, workers, and wealthy horse enthusiasts of all types. Landrum is home to many small entrepreneurial and family-owned businesses as well as larger industries.

Stroll through Landrum’s attractive neighborhoods and you will see a variety of housing types in all price ranges. Landrum also contains a large number of home-grown businesses and restaurants with roots deep in the community. Access to some of the larger neighbors is easy and convenient through nearby State and Interstate Highways. Greenville, South Carolina to the south and Asheville, North Carolina to the north are just minutes away.

While many small cities have lost their traditional downtowns as a result of commercial strip and suburban development, the City of Landrum has held onto and strengthened its traditional downtown center through careful and deliberate city planning. For many years Landrum’s local government in partnership with the business community and supported by the citizenry, have created and continue to maintain a pedestrian-orientated traditional downtown environment. Strolling through downtown Landrum, viewing the historic brick commercial shops, our downtown parks and historic train depot one can easily understand why this community is so fascinating and unique.

Landrum: South Carolina’s Finest Horse and Equestrian Country

This region is known throughout the world for beautiful, scenic countrysides, quiet and quaint lifestyles and abundant, exhilarating horse and equestrian activities. Lush settings, ample grazing and running space, suitable terrain and vegetation, high-acreage ranch and farm/farmette properties, plentiful nearby sources of water and foliage – all of these natural elements combine to provide western South Carolina residents and property owners with superb opportunities for breeding, racing, training and showing some of the finest equine breeds in all of North America. Whether your passion is thoroughbreds, saddlebreds, or any number of breeds, events or activities, western South Carolina is your home field.

For many decades, local natives have taken enormous pride in the majesty of their horses, set against the brilliant greens, blues and colorful foliage of the mountain topography. Mighty warriors when required to defend their families, homes and culture, these early residents were also adept and adaptable agrarians. They knew and cherished their land and capably used it to breed and prepare their steeds for both peace and war. When European settlers moved into these lands they, too, found them perfect for producing champions of all breeds, capable of handling the most challenging military, exploratory, domestic and labor-intensive tasks of their times. As a result, the equestrian industry grew and flourished throughout the region.

That’s why today’s residents of these communities – perhaps your future neighbors and friends - see equestrian activities and livelihoods as an essential and central part of their quality of life. Most folks around here, whether in cities or rural areas, are as comfortable in a saddle as they are in an office chair or couch – and, chances are, most of them would rather be in that saddle right now!
